At B-PHOT, we offer a state-of-the-art instrumentation and metrology platform, featuring high-end confocal fluorescence and Raman microscopes, complemented by ETRO’s atomic force microscope and SEM equipment at IMEC. B-PHOT’s bio-lab provides a safety environment for cell-based (biofilm) studies. Our general photonics laboratories include portable spectrum analysers for measurements across 250-2500 nm, lasers and diverse optical sources. We also have manufacturing equipment for prototyping and replicating optical components and a compact ptychographic microscope for wafer analysis, integral to the DC6 research project. Finally, ETRO has developed in-house software for imaging, ptychographic algorithms and deep learning-based sample creation and defect classification.

Vrije Universiteit Brussel is a medium-size university in the capital of Belgium offering high-quality education to more than 21000 students from 145 nationalities. In Glass-Care, VUB is represented by the Brussels Photonics research group (B-PHOT) and the Electronics and Informatics research group (ETRO RDI), both part of the Faculty of Engineering.
B-PHOT is internationally recognized for its basic, strategic, applied and industrially oriented research in the field of photonics. B-PHOT has a proven track-record in the in-situ use of absorption spectroscopy for first-line archaeometric and historic glass research.
ETRO RDI constitutes an expertise centre in the domain of nano/opto-electronics and computer engineering. The strategic research activities of this group are structured along (1) nano/opto-electronic devices and technologies, (2) physical and physiological signal modelling and sensing, (3) learning-based signal & data processing and systems, (4) privacy preserving learning, federated learning & explainability.
