Main objective
The project advances the monitoring, assessment, cleaning, conservation and digitization of stained-glass windows through an integrated, technology-driven approach. It combines 4 established spectroscopic tools with 3 novel, non-invasive techniques within a digital framework, employing advanced computational analysis and data storage, predictive conservation and long-term monitoring. Environmentally responsible cleaning and treatment methods further support sustainable heritage practices. Through a multidisciplinary training programme, the Doctoral Candidates (DCs) gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge analytical methods, sustainable materials and advanced data management, while pursuing research that pushes beyond current limits.

The project delivers scientific impact by addressing gaps in the understanding, monitoring and conservation of stained-glass windows. The Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) associated with the DCs’ research comprise 15 new end-user protocols, 4 demonstrator set-ups, 2 databases and 3 digital infrastructures which are disseminated across all targeted end-user groups, encompassing bachelor’s and master’s students in conservation-restoration programs, professional conservators, museums and public and stakeholder organizations.
Specific objectives
• Expansion of existing tools: Develop validated protocols for monitoring and material characterization mainly using UV-Vis-NIR (point analysis and multi- and hyperspectral imaging), p-XRF, Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy.
• Integration of novel technologies: Adapt and demonstrate photo acoustics, ptychographic microscopy and multimodal tomography as 3 innovative sensing techniques.
• Sustainable and green conservation methods: Develop eco-friendly monitoring, cleaning and reconstruction solutions addressing glass alteration, biofilm control and toxic material replacement.
• Digital infrastructures for conservation and monitoring: Create a digital framework integrating multimodal sensing, Machine Learning and a digital twin model.
