MA-XRF: In-house built mobile Macroscopic X-Ray Fluorescence scanner allowing to visualize the elemental distribution in macroscopic artefacts such as stained-glass windows. MA-XRPD: In-house built mobile Macroscopic X-ray powder diffraction scanner for visualizing the distribution of crystalline compounds in different types of flat macroscopic artefacts (paintings and stained-glass windows). SEM-EDX: Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) equipped Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis system. In SEM-EDX, a sample is scanned with a nanoscopic electron beam, revealing topographic contrast, local mass density and elemental composition. Digital 3D optical microscope scanner (HIROX): this system can document entire glass panels at the micrometre scale in 3D.

The UAntwerp is a dynamic, forward-thinking, European university offering education to +20000 students, and +6000 employees from 100 different countries. In Glass-Care, UAntwerpen is represented by the Antwerp X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy laboratory (AXIS, Department of Physics) and the Antwerp Cultural Heritage Sciences (ARCHES, Department of Design Sciences) research groups. AXIS, led by Prof. Janssens, performs fundamental, methodological and application-oriented research involving a wide range of analytical techniques. A recurring theme is the development of state-of-the-art methods for imaging of (one or multiple) analyte species. These methods are frequently (but not exclusively) applied to in the field of cultural heritage. ARCHES, led by Prof. Van der Snickt, is associated with Conservation-Restoration and Heritage studies. The group’s mission is to perform transdisciplinary research, applying tools and methods developed in various fields such as the natural sciences, in pursuit of improving the preservation of both tangible and intangible heritage.
