Key Research Facilities for Glass-Care
The SNM hosts a stained-glass collection including a large array of window panels from various historical periods. The research infrastructure includes dedicated conservation-restoration workshops and an analytical laboratory with advanced tools such as UV, IR, and VIS-light photography, microscopes, a spectro-colorimeter, and both micro and portable XRF, Raman, and FTIR spectroscopy instruments.
People involved in Glass-Care
Under the auspices of the Swiss National Museum, three museums and the Collection Centre in Affoltern am Albis are brought together. The museums showcase the history of Switzerland from its beginnings up to the present day, giving an insight into the Swiss identity and the rich tapestry of our country’s history and culture, with temporary exhibitions covering issues of current interest. The Collection Centre houses conservation-restoration laboratories, a conservation research lab, and storage facilities for more than 870000 objects made from diverse materials (textiles, metals, wood, glass, ceramics, etc.) spanning all eras, including numerous stained-glass objects available for study. In Glass-Care, experts from the fields of conservation, research and analysis work on site and contribute their specialist knowledge of stained-glass production and painting techniques, glass chemistry and glass corrosion. |
